Secure Data Destruction
Hard drive shredding, NIST 800-88 data wiping, and certified physical destruction — all from our R2v3 certified facility. Every drive documented with an individual certificate. Pickup available for 12+ items across Metro Detroit.
Data Wiping vs. Physical Shredding
Deleting files, reformatting, or even factory resets do not actually remove data from a hard drive. The data remains on the physical platters and can be recovered using forensic tools. For businesses handling sensitive information — patient records, financial data, proprietary designs, client information — this creates unacceptable risk.
We offer two certified methods: software-based data wiping for drives with resale value, and physical shredding for maximum security. Both include full documentation.
Side-by-Side Comparison
- • Overwrites data with multiple passes
- • Drive can be reused or resold after
- • Requires functional drive
- • May not reach all sectors on SSDs
- • NIST 800-88 "Purge" classification
- • Certificate of Sanitization provided
- • Drive reduced to metal fragments
- • Data recovery is impossible
- • Works on damaged or non-functional drives
- • Recommended for SSDs (bypasses wear leveling)
- • NIST 800-88 "Destroy" classification — highest level
- • Certificate of Destruction provided
Our recommendation: Use data wiping for drives with resale value. Use physical shredding when absolute certainty is required, drives are damaged, or compliance mandates physical destruction.
How Data Destruction Works
A documented, auditable process from pickup to certificate delivery.
Intake & Inventory
Every drive is logged by serial number, make, model, and capacity. You receive a detailed intake receipt documenting everything we collected.
Secure Storage
Devices are stored in our secure, access-controlled facility from the moment they arrive until processing is complete. Chain of custody is maintained at all times.
Certified Processing
Each device undergoes the appropriate destruction method — NIST 800-88 data wiping for drives with resale value, or physical shredding for maximum security. We help you choose the right method.
Verification
Every wiped drive is verified post-sanitization. Any drive that fails verification is automatically routed to physical shredding — no exceptions. Shredded drives are visually confirmed destroyed.
Certificate of Destruction
You receive an individual certificate for every drive — listing serial number, destruction method, verification result, date, and our facility certifications.
Devices & Media We Destroy Data On
We handle certified data destruction on virtually any data-bearing device or media used in business environments.
Hard Disk Drives (HDD)
Traditional spinning platter drives from desktops, laptops, and servers. All form factors: 3.5", 2.5", and enterprise drives.
Solid State Drives (SSD)
Flash-based storage including SATA, NVMe, M.2, and enterprise SSDs. Physical destruction recommended due to wear leveling.
Servers & RAID Arrays
Enterprise SAS, SATA, and NVMe drives from rack-mount servers, blade servers, and storage arrays.
Laptops & Desktops
Complete systems from any manufacturer — Dell, HP, Lenovo, Apple, and others. We remove and process internal drives.
Smartphones & Tablets
iOS and Android devices. Factory reset alone is not sufficient — we use certified tools for complete data erasure.
USB & Flash Drives
External hard drives, portable SSDs, thumb drives, and SD cards. Any removable storage media.
Magnetic Tapes & Backup Media
LTO tapes, DLT tapes, DAT tapes, and other magnetic backup media. Degaussed and physically destroyed.
Copiers & Printers
Modern copiers and printers contain internal hard drives that store copies of every document processed.
Meeting Regulatory Requirements
Our data destruction services support compliance with major regulatory frameworks that require secure data disposition.
Federal guidelines for media sanitization. We follow both "Purge" (wiping) and "Destroy" (shredding) methods depending on your needs.
Requires covered entities to implement policies for the disposal of ePHI. Our processes provide the documentation HIPAA auditors require.
Requires financial institutions to protect consumer financial information, including proper disposal of records on retired media.
Requires publicly traded companies to maintain internal controls over financial reporting, including secure disposition of financial data.
Requires organizations that handle credit card data to render cardholder data unrecoverable when no longer needed.
Requires educational institutions to protect student records, including proper destruction of data on retired devices.

Not all data destruction is created equal.
Many electronics recyclers still rely on outdated data destruction methods that were designed for an era when hard drives were the only storage technology. Standards like DoD 5220.22M were developed in the 1990s for magnetic media and have been officially superseded by NIST 800-88 for over a decade. These obsolete methods are completely ineffective on modern solid-state drives, NVMe storage, and encrypted media.
Some vendors use degaussing as their primary method — but degaussing has zero effect on SSDs. Others rely on random spot-checks rather than verifying every device, leaving unverified drives as potential data breach risks. And vendors who ship equipment to international markets for resale put your data outside U.S. legal jurisdiction entirely.
At eLake, we use exclusively NIST 800-88 Rev. 1 — the current federal standard — with media-specific processes for every storage technology. Every device is individually verified and tracked by serial number. All processing occurs at our certified facility in Livonia, Michigan. Nothing is shipped overseas or subcontracted.
